Service providers need to find ways to cope with the increasing demands for bandwidth and changes in users' viewing patterns while assuring the users' quality of experience.

Internet traffic patterns have changed. While P2P non-commercial distribution remains popular, there are three major developments in the market:

 

The phenomenal success of Internet video sites, such as YouTube, Facebook and 

   MySpace, which are dominating Internet usage around the world and continuously on the

   rise.

The growth of OTT (over-the-top) video sites with TV networks recognizing the business

   value of providing online access to their content.

The legitimization and commercialization of P2P content distribution with media

   companies and CDNs pairing up with P2P players and using P2P technology to deliver

   content over the net. P2P is increasingly seen as a cost-effective means for producers

   and content owners to distribute premium content to end users. P2P content is nearly

   all video and now transitioning over to High Definition delivery.
